Gum Disease Therapy

What is Gum Disease?
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a condition responsible for most adult tooth loss in America. The disease often starts with painless bleeding or irritated gums, but it can progress into serious oral and overall health problems. Gum disease causes increased risk for heart attacks and strokes, as well as low-weight birth, dementia, and diabetes complications.

How does gum disease start?
When dental plaque hardens, it irritates sensitive gum tissue, which leads to infection. Combined with decaying food particles lodged between teeth, this condition creates a prime environment for bacterial growth. The bacteria eat away the bond between gums and teeth to form pockets of infection. Left untreated, gum disease will cause gum recession, jawbone deterioration, tooth loss, and bad breath.

Prevention and Treatment
The most time-tested solution to avoid gum disease is regular, six-month checkups and professional dental cleanings. Our team can evaluate your brushing and flossing techniques, and we may suggest special mouth rinses to reverse early-stage gum disease. We also offer scaling and root planing to remove plaque buildup below the gum line. Our goal is to help you reverse the effects of gum disease, and then protect you from recurrence.

If you notice redness, swelling, bleeding, or tenderness in your gums, or if you have bad breath, call immediately to schedule gum disease assessment with Dr. Carter and our hygiene team. Located on South Colorado Blvd. and Exposition in Denver, CO, we serve patients from Glendale, Cherry Creek, and surrounding areas. Read more about gum disease in our patient library.
