Teeth Regeneration: Growth in the 21st Century
Teeth regeneration sounds like a thing of the future, but maybe not for much longer. Researchers at Georgia Tech and King’s College are looking into how a certain species of fish are regrowing their teeth with the hope that they can activate this mechanism in people, too. In Lake Malawi cichlids, embryos are able to cause growing cells to develop into teeth or taste buds. The process behind this developmental direction is what researchers are interested in–is this something humans could do, too? They’re currently working on the manipulation of the pathways involved in making either teeth or taste buds in the fish with the hopes that they can discover a way to make it happen in people in the future.
